In another intriguing twist, Brian McDevitt has joined Broccoli Ultimate from Johnny Chimpo. Having spent 2 seasons in London playing for Clapham, dominating everyone they came across (apart from the Swedes, obviously) Brian has returned to his native land and will now join up with his captain from WUGC 2004, Mark Earley and numerous teammates from EUC 2003.

For others on the Broccoli team, playing with BritBoy will be a new experience. Fiona MacDonald has been quoted as saying "This is the best day of my life". Eoin Duggan on the other hand remarked "Rumour has it that he's well past his best. He'll have to prove himself before making it into our Iron Man 7".

It goes without saying that this further fuels the rivalry that has developed between Broccoli and Johnny Chimpo. Their meeting in the Dublin Winter League is sure to be a tight and exciting affair. Alan Doyle, Chimpo captain, has declared that he is glad to be rid of such an unreliable player and that his influence was never anything but negative in the dressing room. "His P45 is in the post" were Doyle's closing comments.

Despite the mixed feelings in both camps, this journalist is eagerly awaiting McDevitt's dayboo and hopes that he can fulfill on his potential. He has been known to talk the talk and it remains to be seen if he can walk the walk before his prime years leave him. His new employer will be seeking just reward for the hefty transfer fee forked out and his having broken their wage structure to accommodate this prima donna, success will be demanded. Whether McDevitt can handle that pressure remains to be seen.

Broc pipped at the post

After a great game, which stayed level to 12-12, Johnny Chimpo edged out The Broc 15-13 on Friday night in Belfield.

Twas a dayboo for Ms Sparky Booker but The Broc were without Flying Doctor Duo, JD Coakley and Oisin Flanagan. A full strength Broc team is still awaiting its first outing. Iron Man ultimate seems to have become a habit.

In other news, UCC have declared their interest in competing in the Dublin Winter League. This will see a change in the format of game play and the distinct possibility of a round of games being played in Cork in the new year. The current plan is to have Cork come to Dublin for a weekend to play all their pool games. The return leg of these ties may well be located in Cork.

Shankill has been declared the venue for the Winter League. While not a popular watering hole for Northsiders or Southsiders, the venue is on the DART line (providing easy access for all players) and will have a fully lined regulation size ultimate pitch. All bodes well for Broc domination!

Broccoli Results

Cork Open 2005:

In our first tournament as a team, we travelled south to the fair lands many langers. It quickly became apparent that 7 players was going to mean Iron Man for the weekend.

Despite this adversity, The Broc went to the final unbeaten only to lose to reigning champions Johnny Chimpo on a 13-8 scoreline.

Having come home with the runners up trophy in our first outing, we were both also honoured with the Spirit Award.

Sligo Wig of Shame 2006:
In only tournament number two for the mighty Greens we ventured to Sligo and again finished in 2nd place after a tough final against Johnny Chimpo. As with the Cork Open we played Iron Man for the first day until BB Mac JB arrived to help on the Sunday morning.

Another fun weekend of booze, great Ultimate and a little more bling for the trophy cabinet. Hopefully the next tourny will see a higher finish!
